Precinct 1855
In the 2016 primary, Washingtonians voted on various candidates to send to the general election ballot. On that same primary ballot was a section for the election of Precinct Committee Officers (PCOs). In precinct 1855, I was elected the Democratic PCO by about 14 points (57% to 43%). That may sound like an impressive victory, but when you discover that only 47 people cast a vote for my race, it becomes clear that very few people influenced the outcome.
I know that over a hundred people in my precinct participated in the primary, but when it came to weighing in on the Democratic Party position of PCO, the majority of my neighbors chose to not participate. I could speculate about the reasons and point to a number of possible factors, but I think I will just ask them. As a PCO, talking with my neighbors, forming relationships and providing resources is my duty. So polling people on their participation in the PCO race should fold nicely into my duties.
